Softball Umpires

  1. Q: Can  my daughter be put on the same team as her friend?
A: We get numerous requests from parents that want their daughter to be put with a certain coach or with a friend.
As a matter of fairness in the selection of teams, because of the potential for "stacking" teams and manipulating the selection process, the league uses the following draft procedure.
How the draft works is like this.
We start with a master list sorted by age groups. All girls in a certain division are categorized by age group. The team with the worst win loss record from the previous season picks first, from a list of the oldest girls and than, the second team picks next from the older girls. After all the older players are picked, the teams start picking the younger girls from the list. Check the by-laws for more information.
The managers get a first pick usually their daughter and their next pick.  We do not allow managers to select coaches in advance and therefore select ball players indirectly. We cannot arrange in advance who's dad or mom, is going  to be a coach by expecting a daughter to be on that team. You can may ask that a player be put on a certain team, but there is no guarantee that these requests can be honored.
  2. Q: When are the games?
A: We play one week night game, Monday-Thursday (check the team schedule for days and times)
and one Saturday game. For the 2004 season we are working with a revolving schedule. All Divisions play throughout Saturday at different times. Games start at 9:00, 11:15 and than 1:30, Some other games will be played according to individual schedules and Rain out makeup games. There will also be times when extra games will be added during the week to makeup rain outs. Last year we went with the following schedule, generally speaking Saturday games are broken down into these time slots.
Tee Ball: Tuesdays and Thursdays :    6:00 PM
    Instructional Division:     8:30-10:15
    Novice Division:           10:30-12:30
    Junior Division:             12:45-2:45
    Senior Division:              3:00-5:00
There are exceptions to this time schedule depending on how many teams are in a division. For example, some instructional teams may play 12:45 at North Main or Pine Tree.
  3. Q: How long are the games?
A: Games last for 7 innings or 2 hours which ever comes first. A new inning can not start 1 hour and 45 minutes after the official start time. If a team starts an inning and it goes past the 2 hour maximum time allotment the official team score will revert back to the last full inning. All teams must be off the field no later than the 2 hour allotment even if the game was delayed due to the 15 minute grace period.
Week night Games will start at 6:00 and will be played until the 7 innings are played, the 2 hours go by or the game is called due to darkness, which is up to the discretion of the umpire. Instructional and Tee Ball team managers will decide when it is too dark to continue. (There are no umpires in the Instructional Division and T Ball Divisions). Safety is our main concern.
  4. Q: What if my daughter is unable to attend a game due to illness, family function or school event?
A: It will be the player, parent or guardians responsibility to inform the Manager of her team as soon as it is know that a player will not be able to attend a scheduled game or practice. In the Novice, Junior and Senior divisions we pay umpires $40.00 a game and once that umpire arrives at the field the league is responsible to pay that ump. We do not want to pay umpires to show up and go home and it is not fair to the managers and coaches that rush home from work and end up forfeiting games because of lack of information from players families. Obviously if a player becomes ill that day we can not expect 2 days notice but a call or email to the manager is expected.
  5. Q: What are the rules in base running, pitching and batting?
A: There are many rules rules involved with each of those important aspects of softball. If you are really interested in finding all of them out, I would suggest clicking here for a basic guide to softball.  You may also feel free to ask your manager or any board member, they will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
  6. Q: What does the term slg, onb, oab mean?
A: The abbreviation SLG- is short for; SLUGGING AVERAGE Total bases divided by at-bats; combines nicely with On
Base Percentage to create Production (PRODUCTION On Base Percentage plus Slugging Average: a simple but elegant
measure of batting prowess, in that the weaknesses of one-half of the formulation, On Base Percentage, are countered by the strengths of the other, Slugging Average, and vice a versa). Abbreviated as SLG.
I can not find any meanings for onb or oab, but for a complete list of baseball, softball terms click here. OBP- On Base percentage, OPS- On Base Plus Slugging, OBA- Opponents Batting Average or On Base Against, OFA- Outfield Assists. Hope this helps.
  7. Q: Where do you get your dunking booth for the picnic?
A: Orange County Rentals Inc. 342-5611
  8. Q: What is a Crow Hop?
A: 1. Pitching (Crow Hop and Leap)

Crow Hop

A crow hop is defined as a replant of the pivot foot prior to releasing the ball by:

a. sliding the foot in front of the pitching plate;

b. lifting the pivot foot and stepping forward;

c. jumping forward with the pivot foot off the pitching plate prior to starting the pitch:

To help determine if the pivot foot has been replanted:

a. Find the pivot foot when the hands separate to start the pitch;

b. If the pivot foot is off and in front of the pitching plate before the hands separate to start the

pitch…a crow hop has occurred.

Leap

A leap is when:

a. both feet are airborne by the pitcher prior to releasing the ball.

b. The pivot foot must stay in contact with the ground as it drags away from the pitching plate until the lead foot touches the ground.

9. Tee-ball league

Q: I would like information regarding the Tee-ball league and my 5 year old.  Is the age appropriate to start?  Is the league full?  If not may I register now?  When does practice begin?  When does the season begin/end?  How many games are played?

     A:

  1. For the 2005 season, Tee ball is for girls in Kindergarten and 1st grade whose birthday falls between December 1st 1997 and November 30th 1999.
  2. As soon as players are assigned teams and managers have been sworn in, players can expect a call from the manager introducing him or herself and a short rundown of practice schedule, picture day and game days and times.
  3. I can not give you a definite day of the week for this years tee ball players games until we are officially awarded fields by the Towns of Monroe and Woodbury and the MWCSD, but I believe that we are leaning towards having games on Tuesdays and or Thursday evenings. 1 game a week, 45 minutes of instruction followed by 45 minutes of a game. Time to start either 5:45 or 6:00 PM.
  4. The season will begin the week of April 1st, 2006, Picture day will be March 11th, 2006, the league picnic which is the end of the MWGSL Season is going to be held Wednesday, June 21st.
  5. It hasn't been decided yet but it will definitely be a 10 game schedule.

10.   I signed my daughter up for tee-ball in October,

Q: I signed my daughter up for tee-ball in October,

  1. Are players assigned teams yet?
A: Yes, the teams and managers have been assigned.

  2.   I haven't heard from a manager as of Feb 16th.
A: You should have heard from your manager by now. If you haven't, you should email us here and we will contact your daughters division coordinator and have them contact your daughters manager. Please be sure to give your daughters name, your phone number and email address.

  3.  I noticed a schedule of gym times for Tee-ball on the website. Is this something I should be taking my daughter to?
A: You can bring your daughter to one of the assigned gym times for Tee-Ball. Just keep in mind that only soft gym balls are allowed to be used and you must stay with your daughter. Email us and your daughters managers will be contacting you shortly.

11.    Q: How far is it from the catcher position to second base?
A: It's 84 feet 10 inches from the back of home plate to the middle of
2nd base, for Juniors and Seniors and 77 feet 9 inches for Novice.

12.   Q: Should there be a finger in every hole of the glove? why/why not?
A: A baseball / softball glove should be worn with all fingers in the glove. Some gloves come with a loop on the outside to put your finger in. This glove was made to be worn with your finger outside if it is more comfortable for you. The only other reasons you might leave one finger on the exterior of the glove is for comfort and the other is if someone on your team has a rocket for an arm and you aren't catching the ball in the webbing and are feeling a stinging pain in the palm of your hand. They sell a product to stop this call a Sting Stopper. Generally speaking a baseball glove should be worn with all
fingers inside the mitt or glove.

13.     Q: My daughter is registered to play in the Senior Division this year.  She may have a conflict in the spring as far as being available for softball and we were thinking that it might be best for her not to play this year.   Since the season hasn't started yet, would it be possible to receive a refund from the league if she quits at this point?    Also, what would the latest date be to make a decision?   I'm hoping we can work this out and she can still play, but I would just like to know in case she can't.

A: Good Question.  If your daughter had decided to drop out two weeks ago before uniforms were ordered, the league would have refunded the whole registration fee. At this point 2/18/06, all uniforms have been ordered and you can still cancel your daughters registration, but the league will have to deduct the cost of the uniform which is $26.00. What you need to do is e-mail us at bunt@mwgsl.org and give us your daughters name, address and phone number, and we will send a refund less the uniform cost. The sooner you make a decision the better it is for the team that your daughter will drop off of, but your daughter has up until the first game or team practice to decide if her schedule will allow her to play or not. After the first scheduled game or practice, no refund will be returned. Hope this helps.

14.  Q: How do we find out about rainouts?

A: The way we handle rain out games is:

  1. First a message is put on the league voice mail, 774-3792. This is usually done before 4PM weekdays and as soon as possible on Saturdays.

  2. Then the head umpire is informed as well as the division coordinators and webmaster.

  3. Coordinators will call the managers and the managers will call the players. Some teams set up phone chains so information can get out faster.

  4. If the Webmaster is near a computer, first a message is put on the home page of the website, then an email message is sent to all members that signed up for the Bravenet Mailing List. (This message is sent to members but sometimes it is delayed).

  5. The last thing that gets done is we make a notice on cancellations.com.

15.   Q: My daughter is 11 years old and going into the middle school in September, when is registration and how far behind the other players will she be in her age group, this would be the first time playing softball?

  1. If your daughter is 11 or 12 years old by Dec. 1st 2006, she will be in the junior Division.

  2. If she turns 13 by this date she will be in the senior division.

  3. The MWGSL is a Recreational softball league. Naturally she would be a better player if she had more experience prior to playing organized sports with girls that have been playing for a few years and have been practicing their skills, but we do not disallow a player that wants to play because of a lack of experience.

  4. I do not know your daughter so I can not tell you if she will like playing softball. If she is athletic and learns to catch and throw quickly, the rules are fairly simple and I think she will enjoy it.

16.      Q: Is there any league for 4 yr olds or do I have to wait until she is 5?

  1. Currently the Monroe Woodbury's Girls Softball League's starting age is 5 years old or Kindergarten age. If you like you could email The MW Little League and see what their  T Ball players starting age is. mwlittleleague@hotmail.com
