Congratulations to the Hank Werner Memorial Scholarship Fund winners: Julie Dolan, Jamie Mapes and Amanda Musich. They will get $500.00 each! Minutes from Meeting on May 1st 2005
DeAngelis Hall, Monroe
Attendance: Sindi Price, Anne-Marie Williams, Penny DeMartin, Glenn DeMartin, David
Rosen, Eric Friedman, Mike Morgillo, Carl Onken, Mark Gordon, Cassie Powell, Ben
Powell, Joe Vitanza, Nick Santoro, Wendy Ansons and Paul Krupin.
Meeting was called to order at 7:35 p.m. Sindi Price chaired the meeting in Steve Musich’s absence.
Minutes from the April meeting were approved and Board members were introduced.
Important Dates:
- Sunday June 5th – Last meeting DeAngelis Hall, Monroe.
- Monday June 20th – All Star Games start at 6:00 p.m.
- Tuesday June 21st – Coaches/Managers games at 5:45 p.m. Volunteers
must be there by 5 p.m. to move tables.
- Wednesday June 21st – Picnic at 5:30 p.m.
It was suggested that we solicit Monroe Parks to move tables back after the picnic and forfeit the $250.00 fee. Nick Santoro will check into this and report back to the board.
Need names of returning board members by the next meeting on June 5th since vote must be done then for the 2006 season.
Mark Gordon stated that some equipment was removed from team bags in lock up after they were made up at the beginning of season and as a result, some teams were without helmets and proper chinstraps. Coordinators must talk with their managers and get a tally of missing straps and helmets to him immediately. Suggestion was made to the board that in September, coaches get together to equip and label team bags so exact determination can be made as to needed items.
David Rosen gave account of rainouts so far to be rescheduled: 6 senior games, 1 junior game and 3 novice games. Sunday May 14 is available for reschedules.
Need volunteers for Nominating Committee for the 2006 season and Tournament Director for the intra-league tournament. Howard Golden was "volunteered" for both.
Need "All Star" picks by June 1st. Players MUST be able to play game on June 20th. Novice division – 3 girls per team; Junior division – 5 per team; Senior division – 4 per team and 1 girl from each team for the "Citizenship Award". One player from each division will be chosen out of the girls from each team.
For the Picnic, Cassie said that each team would be allotted a $25.00 Shoprite gift certificate for food in lieu of hot dogs. A deejay and ice cream truck would also be provided. Activities include a "bounce house", tattoos and face painting. It was decided to eliminate the dunking booth and replace with a pitching machine. Eric Friedman will check with Frozen Ropes about the pitching machine.
Need volunteers to arrange and order the trophies. The Board decided that smaller trophies for the Instructional division would be better this year than the medallions used in the past. Tee-Ball would continue getting medallions. Howard Golden was "volunteered" to be in charge of the trophies.
Sindi expressed a big thank you to all those who helped out on Picture Day.
Eric has agreed to coordinate Frozen Ropes summer camp and needs twenty-five girls to sign up in order to do the program. He is looking for fields to use - Mary Harriman field was one suggestion he will be following up on.
Mike Morgillo spoke about a "Wisk Win a Ball Field" contest. The winning team with the most "Wisk" points would get $10,000 for a ball field makeover. Flyers were handed out to all present at the meeting and told not to follow the instructions on the flyers but just return the coupons to the league by the date of the picnic. It was suggested that we hook up with Little League on this contest to maximize our winning potential and use Smith Clove Field as the recipient if we won.
Next meeting will be June 5th at DeAngelis Hall and this will be the last meeting for the season.
Motion to adjourn meeting 1st by Cassie, 2nd by Eric.
Meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.

Walter Hickey and Doug Anders were sworn in as managers.
Important dates:
- April 9th Picture Day at Smith Clove Park.

Steve thanked all those who showed up on Saturday to help with the installation of face guards and asked for all "soft" soft balls to be returned to coordinators.
Scorebooks and game balls were given out to managers: 11inches for novices and 12 inches for junior and senior divisions.
Each Manager should bring ice to the games and if anyone observes unsafe practices at the games, it was stressed that they should speak up and say something either to the offenders or a Board member.
The 10+under and 12+under Tournament teams will have another tryout soon; see Nick Santoro or Mark Gordon.
Need volunteers for Picture Day and the Hank Werner Scholarship Committee.
Rainouts will be on website and voice mail by 4 pm day of game. Dave Rosen, umpire-in-chief will inform coordinators at the same time.
Thirty-five girls took part in the Frozen Ropes clinic on March 28th. Tony (FR) is looking to hold "free coaches clinic" at Frozen Ropes possibly on May 6th.
Anyone who wants to be a Board Member should let the Board know.
One senior division team is looking for players because some girls dropped out.
NO parents or kids are to call out "strikes" or "balls" around the cage as this confuses the players and does not sit well with the umpires.
Steve stated that Umpires are not to be argued with and that each coach should walk with copy of "Rule Modifications" which can be found on website, since some umpires are new. Unlimited substitution is part of the rule modifications.

Meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. and introduction of Board Members followed.
Motion to approve minutes from January meeting 1st by Eric, 2nd by Mark.
Approximately 472 registered players for 2005 season with 36 teams that surpassed all previous season registrations:
Tee Ball–8 teams; Instructional-8; Novice-8; Juniors-5; Seniors-7.
We have more than enough Sponsors and Steve thanked everyone who helped with sponsorship, registration and general support.
Some Managers were sworn in at the senior draft held in January since we had a quorum: Joe King, Dan Pavlu, Mike Morgillo, Penny DeMartin and Tony Pilato.
Other divisions were sworn in tonight as follows:
Tee Ball - John Thuman, Wendy Ansons, Peter Tsoi, Bill Olsen, Frank Kincade.
Instructional - Anthony Ricciardi, Steve Ellman, Pat Sullivan, Howard Golden, Kathy Fico, Ted Hiller, Jeff Gray.
Novice - Nick Santoro, Eric Storckman.
Important Dates:
Free Pitching Clinic for all levels for the next 2 Wednesdays, 9th and 16th at the CV Elementary school from 5:30 – 7 pm by Steve O’Brien.
Next Meeting - March 2nd at MW Middle School. Starting April, meetings will be held the first Sunday at the DeAngelis Hall in Monroe.
Picture Day - Saturday March 12th and Tee Ball and Instructional uniforms will be given out to the Managers at that time. Picture day will be posted on the web also.
Opening Day – Week of April 4th
Last season day – week ending June 11th.
Intra-league tournaments – starts June 12th for older girls.
Tournament team 12+under tryouts will be March 19th at North Main.
Coach & Managers game to be played on June 21st.
Picnic – Wednesday June 22nd.
Gym Balls can be obtained from your Coordinator. Must use "soft" softballs or rag type softballs in the gyms. Gym space is available; check the website.
Equipment – New helmets will come already assembled but we have 94 old helmets, which need to be retrofitted with facemasks & chin straps. Bats must have ASA approved stamp to be used. Umpires will check bats. As soon as helmets come in a callout will be issued for volunteers to assemble facemasks to them. It takes some time so the more volunteers, the quicker we get done.
"Team Work Divides The Effort And Multiplies The Effect"
Looking for volunteers for the Hank Werner Scholarship Fund and Golf fundraiser. Hank was a coach who passed tragically and we would like this Fund to be successful in his memory.
Received a bid for pictures from Artistic Images that is higher than current bid by Hudson Valley Photo. Unless a lower bid comes in, we will go with Hudson Valley Photo. Weinert Tee-Shirts will do uniforms.
Monroe Parks Dept. will let the league keep our own "gang boxes" at the dugouts in Smith Clove. Received complaints of "gum sticking" by Parks Dept. Managers are to advise their girls that if this continues, we will have the girls clean dugouts on their time.
The League will register 5 teams with the Babe Ruth Softball Tournament.
Nick Santoro will manage the 10+under team and
Mark Gordon, the 12+under team.
Howard brought issues he had about the pitching clinic that is run on Tuesdays by Janice. He felt that she needed to be able to accommodate all levels of pitchers, not just the ones that pitch well. Steve stated that he spoke to Janice and she agreed to open up the age groups for next year to include instructional. Comment was made that is why Steve O’Brien is running current clinic for those that are "not that good". Steve suggested that coaches start using the gym time allotted to the league starting in October primarily by their pitchers and that the use is distributed more evenly. Gym space from February should go towards batting and catching. The gym use issue will be reevaluated next year.
Next Meeting will be Wednesday March 2nd at the MW Middle School small cafeteria.
Motion to adjourn 1st by Steve, 2nd by Howard.

New Business:
Steve proposed moving regular meetings to the first Tuesday of each month in the Middle School. Approved.
Plan to stop Jacket Sales unless someone volunteers to coordinate. Penny DeMartin volunteered. Bids being solicited for new uniforms, pictures and required helmets with face guards and chin straps (aprox. cost 5200.00).

Joe Vitanza again re-visited his suggestion from the last meeting to raise fees or barter for “service hours” from all parents of girls in the league. Lack of volunteerism continues to be a serious problem for the league. Steve suggested that the finance committee will address and tabled the matter. No motions or resolution.
Volunteer Coordinator: Board approved a motion to create the new position of “Volunteer Coordinator”.
Cassie Powell was nominated and accepted for the position. Focus on “mobilizing” more volunteers and responsible for “staffing” needs of the league. Many thanks to Cassie for her innovation and commitment.

Have a great summer!

MTA minutes of April Meeting…Maureen Boyle/Mike Morgillo
All-Star Game / Picnic: All Managers asked to select 4 girls from each team. No guidelines or selection criteria discussed. All Star Games scheduled for June 19th at 10:00. Picnic to follow at 12:00 noon to 4PM.
Important note to all Parents, Coaches, and Managers!!!
Due to a lack of volunteers, the scope and activities of the picnic will be modified accordingly: The league will provide the DJ, Awards, and Ice Cream. Food will be the responsibility of each team to coordinate. The board recommends that each manager appoint a team parent to coordinate food and drinks for your team. Additionally, the board voiced concern on the general poor level of “volunteerism” in the league. All managers and coordinators are asked to “lobby” all parents (especially at the Novice and Instructional Division Level) for board positions and committee assignments. Without an infusion of “new blood”, the future of the league is in jeopardy.
Frozen Ropes: Camp is scheduled for one week (July 19th through the 23rd). $175.00. 10% of the fee is donated to the club.
ASA Rules: New facemask for batting helmets will be required in 2005. Anticipated cost of $5000.00 for replacement. Retrofit not practical.
Umpire-in Chief: 48 Make-up games scheduled to date. Concern raised regarding the current demeanor and caliber of umpires. Perceived to be unapproachable, strict and severe for this level of play. Floor discussion ensued. No resolution or motions.
Bob Bracco brought suggestion for a “Zero-Cancellation” Policy to the floor. Immediately dismissed with extreme prejudice by all present.
Committee’s:
Budget/Finance: Steve Musich, Carl Onken and Sindi Price
Rules Committee: Penny DeMartin, still needs 3
volunteers and
Nominating Committee: No volunteers
All committees need volunteers. See any board member
or manager if interested.

Joe Vitanza opened a discussion regarding the lack of volunteers in the league. Suggested that we either increase registration fees to hire needed help as appropriate or offer volunteers “service hours” in exchange for fees. Discussion ensued. Agreed to discuss at next meeting and resolve prior to next registration period. Also suggested that all coaches and managers should be at registration.

Monroe.
Board members present; Steve Musich, Carl Onken, Mike Morgillo, Eric Friedman,
Penny DeMartin, Howard Golden, Tony Pilato, Kristina Hinck.
Board members not present: Sindi Price, Maureen Boyle, and Bob Bracco.
Members present: Debbie Cornacchio, Jim Murphy, Walter Hickey, Joe Vitanza, Mark Gorden and Gary Alberse
MTA Minutes of March 21 general meeting. 1st by Eric 2nd by Kristina
No opposition minutes accepted.
Steve welcomed all present and thanked them for their commitment and support. Introduction of the board was skipped and Steve went over the phone number, new e-mail address and website address.
The all-star games will be held Saturday June 19th most likely starting at 10:00AM at Smith Clove Park with the picnic to be held between 12:00 and 4:00. Those times are tentative. Steve also mentioned that a picnic coordinator hasn’t been found and we need one to have a picnic. Joe Vitanza had mentioned that the Junior and Senior girls could do without the picnic and maybe just let the Novice, Instructional and Tee Ball go and do away with it for the older girls.
Also discussed was the coaches manager game normally held the night before could not be at Smith Clove but maybe at the Varsity field instead. Also anyone with a flatbed or pick up truck would be a big help to move the tables either the night before or the morning of the picnic. To be discussed further at the next meeting.
There were no reports from the officers and since we have no chairpersons for committees, the meeting moved to equipment updates.
Eric explained that next year ASA was going to change the rules to include a double first base and helmets with face guards. This year the league initiated the double first base for seniors, juniors and novice. Next year it will include Instructional and Tee Ball. Eric mentioned that the bases were pretty ratty and was going to order throw down plastic bases for the Tee Ball division. Tony agreed. Eric also mentioned he had a problem with the double first base at Smith Clove 2 and wanted to order a double first base for fields 1 and 2 that would fit into the LL inserts. It was agreed to try it providing someone brings the bases in the morning and the last team takes it back at the end of the day. The details are to be worked out ASAP.
Joe Vitanza mentioned that many girls have helmets of their own and asked if there was a way to help these girls retrofit there helmets with face guards. Steve mentioned that each brand has there own face guard and we would help any way we could. The league needs to order a couple of different kinds to see how they will work and we also need to include straps.
The meeting moved on to Fields: Steve mentioned that the TOW moved our fields to the Earl Reservoir Sunday Mornings from 8AM to 2PM. Only teams whose coaches and managers signed and returned notarized waivers will be allowed to practice and use the fields, Steve mentioned that he still hasn’t made a practice schedule and still needs to get a list of team rosters to Woodbury Parks before we can use the fields. Howard will be keeping track of school field playability for bookeeping purposes.
So far we still only have a 16U tournament team being managed by Debbie with help from Steve. No date on try-outs as of yet.
On the agenda Steve listed the 9 standing committees that make this league run. He impressed upon the officers that the work needs to be split amongst all the board members and they needed to reach out to parent volunteers to help carry the load. At this time no one volunteered for any of the committees but Penny said she would think about chairing the rules committee.
The meeting moved to the intra-league tournament. Steve mentioned that someone needs to step up if the tournament is going to happen. They will need to solicit businesses in the area to donate money to help defer the cost of trophies. Also a tournament schedule will need to be created. A discussion ensued about what the tournament sponsors would receive for their money and it was decided to give them a plaque, have a banner created with all the sponsors’ names and that their support would be included in September photo news ad for registration. At this time no one volunteered.
The meeting moved to the Hank Werner scholarship fund. Mike said it was too
late to go forward with a golf outing or dinner dance for this year besides no
one volunteered to do so. Steve said Carl was in the process of securing a games
of chance ID number so we can run a 50/50 raffle. He will keep us updated. Steve
also mentioned that Rich Goldstein ran a successful raffle for the Monroe Fire
department and volunteered to do so for the league.
Steve mentioned that if we don’t raise any money for the fund that we should
think about dissolving it.
Kristina voiced her concern to do everything possible to keep it going as she
new Hank Werner personally when she played in the league and said he was a great
guy.
Unfinished business: Steve appointed Mike Morgillo to be the go between to
handle all aspects of the Frozen Ropes involvement in the league. He will
contact them and find out how they will keep track of the money Frozen Ropes
will give back for girls and teams that use their facilities. Kristina asked
that we get a contract of some sort.
Steve again stressed the Town of Woodbury waiver situation. Mike said he was
going to try and get Sue Kelly to give out the Citizenship Award at the picnic
this year, if she can make it, he also said he could try and get Hillary
Clinton, but someone remarked that then there would be secret service people
around and that would be uncomfortable.
New Business: Mike noted that Frozen Ropes wants to run a summer camp for MWGSL in June or July. They are in touch with the school district to secure fields. $175.00 per player 5 days, 9AM to 3PM. 100 girls would have to sign up to make this work, 50 for instructional and novice and 50 for juniors and seniors. They also want to setup a table at the picnic and would like to bring a radar pitching booth with them. Mike will find out if the league will have to pay. Steve mentioned that this year we will be picking up mangers equipment after their last game. Details will need to be worked out. Eric will need help from coordinators and parent volunteers so we don’t have to hunt down equipment like we did this year. Only tournament team managers will be allowed to hold equipment until they are done with their games. Rain out games are going to be made up starting this week. Coordinators will start to reschedule games starting Thursday. Joe Vitanza and Jim Murphy will make up their game SMUG #2 on Thursday at the Varsity field, and coordinators were told to try and fill in the fields while we still have dry weather. Maureen needs 48 hours notice to try and secure an umpire. Uno’s fundraiser will be Wednesday April 28th to benefit tournament teams. If games are cancelled no one is allowed to use the fields.
Next meeting will be Sunday May 16th. The June meeting will be the 2nd Sunday, June 13th.
